Nichtrussische Völker nutzten die neuen Freiheiten, um sich zunehmend auch öffentlich vom Sowjetischen bzw. Russischen zu distanzieren.

Zum Ausdruck kam dies in einer Reihe nationaler Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen, die teilweise friedlich verliefen, zum Beispiel in den baltischen Staaten, und teilweise schwerwiegende militärische Auseinandersetzungen mit der Zentralmacht in Moskau nach sich zogen.

Die katastrophale Nationalitätenpolitik der Sowjetunion in der

Im vierten Kapitel wird eine Auswahl von Konflikten im Kaukasus nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion dargestellt. Im fünften und letzten Kapitel
